Technology utilization by both the public and private sector continues to grow at unprecedented rates.  As public and private organizations use technology more to reduce expenses, increase productivity, and improve service offerings, they must also be mindful of the introduction of new security risks.  According to a recent report by the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, publicly acknowledged ransomware attacks against state and local governments jumped 39 percent in 2018, and so far during 2019 there are no signs that this trend is slowing down anytime soon.  Some reports indicate that approximately 88% of public sector organizations have faced at least one cyberattack over the past two years and approximately 62% of organizations said they experienced two or more.  While private organizations continue to be plagued with cybercrime activity, it appears that public organizations are quickly becoming a target of choice for cyber attackers.

Now more than ever, public sector organizations must realize the risk to their digital assets and be committed to cultivating a culture that prioritizes cybersecurity.  National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) – observed every October – is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives with the goal of raising awareness about cybersecurity and increasing the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident.  In recognition of NCSAM, we are excited to once again host this Summit for our public sector partners, and we hope you make plans to attend!

The 6th annual Cybersecurity Summit is sponsored by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security (MS Analysis & Information Center), and the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services.
